VOC Meet

March 10, 2018
Oak Mountain State Park - Pelham, AL [park info]
  • Turn off of John Findley Drive near mile marker 4 (BMX track is also here).
  • Start any time between 9am-12pm, with a maximum 3 hour time limit. Everyone must be finished by 2pm, when control pickup begins.
COURSES: (course design by Joey Ciza)
  • YELLOW (beginner): ~3km, 10 controls
  • SCORE-O: 32 controls
COURSE NOTES:
  • For the Score-O, there will be 32 controls placed in the woods. Each control is assigned a point value 10, 20, 30 or 40 points. The object is to get as many points as possible within the 3 hour time limit. If you go over the 3 hour time limit, you will be deducted 10 points for every minute over 3 hours. To visit all the controls, you will travel about 10km or so. Control pickup begins promptly at 2pm, so if you want the entire 3 hour time limit, you will need to start no later than 11am. Beginners, don't worry, many of the controls are within a short distance of the start/finish and you don't have to stay out all three hours if you don't want to.
  • If you don't want to try the Score-O, there will also be a traditional Yellow beginner course with 10 controls and distance of about 3km.

What is course climb?
Determine the "optimum route" that an orienteer would take on the course. Measure its length in meters. Note that this length will generally be 5-10% longer than the posted course length, which is the straight line distance for the course. Then count how many contour lines this route crosses going uphill. Multiply this number of contour lines by the contour interval in meters. This "climb" should normally not exceed 4% of the optimum route distance.
(% = climb/length * 100)
Waiver:
All entrants participating in a VOC orienteering meet must complete and sign a waiver (required by OUSA). You may download this form below and bring it with you, or you can fill one out at the meet.
Groups:
If you plan on bringing a large group of people (more than 10), please let us know at least one week ahead of time so we may have enough maps available. Small groups may go out together using a single map. Please specify which course(s) and how many maps. Contact joeyvulcanorienteeringorg
